Federal nutrition benefits like WIC are a lifeline for many low-income families trying to eat healthy, but the rules make it hard to use those benefits at local farms.

That means working families miss out on fresh food, while money that could support local farmers ends up going elsewhere.

That’s why Lauren just introduced 2 new bills that will expand access to Farmers’ Markets and healthy local foods.

→ The Farmers to Families Act modernizes the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to make it easier for families to buy fresh food from local farmers.

→ The New Markets for Farmers and Families Act strengthens the Farmers’ Market and Local Food Promotion Program at USDA and provides dedicated funding to open new farmers’ markets in neighborhoods without them.

These bills won’t just help families use their benefits to access fresh local food — they will also allow farmers to sell more directly to their communities. That sounds like a win-win to us!
