Hear from Carey on why community is how Green values turn into action.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friend,
The Green Party of Canada is built by people.
People who didn’t always expect to find connection with the Green Party of Canada, but did.
Carey Rutherford, Green Party Federal Councillor for Alberta, Shadow Cabinet member and donor, shared why community is what brought him to the Greens, and what keeps him here:

I want to share something personal with you.
In 2019, I was volunteering with the City of Calgary Neighbours when I learned, almost by accident, that there was a Green Party in Alberta.
A colleague was busy running as a candidate. I honestly assumed he was deluded.
Growing up in Calgary, I wasn’t always open about my environmental or diversity concerns. So when I met Green Party members who shared my loves and fears, it surprised me, and it grounded me.
That sense of connection only grew.
I became a candidate in 2021. Later, I joined the Federal Council. And along the way, I discovered something important about the Green Party of Canada: it is built on respectful honesty.
That matters, especially in an unpredictable province like Alberta.
Being part of the Greens has felt like the movements of a symphony: an exciting opening, changes in theme, a quieter middle, and now an exultant flourish. With everything happening in the world today, my commitment to the Green and human values we voice has never been stronger.
What I’ve learned is this: empathy and oneness aren’t just ideas we talk about.
We turn them into policy.
We change how our country talks about ecological responsibility and human rights. We draw attention to international ecological accords. We speak out when human rights are ignored. We say things that many people feel but don’t always have space to say out loud.
And we do it together.
Whether we’re an orchestra with a conductor, or a chamber group working closely side by side, provinces like Alberta, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador and all the others that share this land, need something to knit us together.
That’s why I stay committed to this work.
I believe in having conversations with councillors from other provinces. With Shadow Cabinet colleagues who bring different expertise. With Green Party members from everywhere.
That’s how real progress happens.
This February, the Green Party of Canada is focusing on community: sharing the people, relationships, shared values, and stories that make our work possible.
Our goal this month is to raise $118,300, to support organizing and outreach efforts across the country in 2026.
If you’re able, we invite you to be part of that.
if everyone reading this email gives $100, we will hit our goal in no time:
