Dear Mississippian,

In keeping with my commitment to transparency and accountability, I want to provide you with a short update on the work I am doing on your behalf during the 2026 Legislative Session. Below is a brief summary of legislation advanced by the Mississippi Senate in the fifth week of session.

Disaster Response

The Senate approved legislation transferring $20 million to support Mississippi Emergency Management Agency disaster response and recovery efforts following the severe weather events that began January 24.

Transportation & Infrastructure

A $265 million investment was approved to widen Interstate 55 in Madison County and expand Lakeland Drive/Highway 25 to improve safety and traffic flow.

Government Finance & Operations

Legislation passed to modernize state payment practices by rounding amounts owed to the nearest five cents and to allow municipalities more flexibility in using certain funds for sidewalks and public buildings.

Retirement & Savings

The Senate advanced measures creating a state-sponsored retirement savings option for private-sector workers, strengthening long-term PERS funding, and expanding deferred compensation investment options.

Federal Funds Accountability

Legislation was passed to set Mississippi’s ARPA closeout timeline, strengthen reporting requirements, and ensure federal funds are used efficiently and responsibly before federal deadlines.

Education

A new financial literacy act was approved to integrate personal finance education into middle school curriculum beginning in the 2027–2028 school year.

Public Safety & Courts

The Senate passed bills prohibiting name changes for violent and sex offenders and barring political campaigning during active court terms.

Corrections & Reentry

A pilot program was approved to help formerly incarcerated individuals transition back into society through housing, employment, and accountability services.

Health & Licensing

Legislation was passed allowing the Board of Pharmacy to create a confidential treatment program for impaired licensees while maintaining public safety.

All of these measures now move to the Mississippi House of Representatives for consideration.

Looking ahead, the Senate has met its committee reporting deadline and will soon face key floor action deadlines on general bills and constitutional amendments.
