Prolonged detentions are more routine under the second Trump administration, and even some immigrants prepared to leave the United States willingly are kept from moving until they see a judge, reports Gisela Salomon of the Associated Press [link removed].

The Supreme Court ruled in 2001 that immigrants could not be held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention indefinitely and set a six-month limit. As of mid-January, 7,252 people had been in custody for longer than six months, Salomon notes.

Additionally, after Anna Flagg and Shannon Heffernan of The Marshall Project [link removed] reported a 600% increase in child detentions at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Catholic leaders are speaking out for the children and their families, reports Simone Orendain of OSV News [link removed].

Federal enforcement efforts should be "guided by Christ's call in the Gospel to solidarity with ‘the least of these,’" David Spicer of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops worte in a statement to the outlet.

Take a deep breath, then take in the words of children at Dilley, as told to Mica Rosenberg of ProPublica [link removed] — and don't miss the photos by Anna Connors. The administration’s country-based visa restrictions are affecting a different set of children and families: those in the international adoption process, Hannah Herrera of Christianity Today [link removed] reports.

On the economic front, Elizabeth Findell and Ruth Simon of The Wall Street Journal [link removed], with photos by Christopher Lee, pick up on the economic hit South Texas is experiencing — and their editorial board colleagues [link removed] look at whether Florida immigration laws have contributed to slowing job growth there.

It seems safe to say that at least to most New Englanders, Bad Bunny was the highlight of the Super Bowl. Aditi Bharade of Business Insider [link removed] has more on his performance, while Jack Blanchard and Dasha Burns of Politico [link removed] pull together reactions to it. Oh, and congratulations to the Seahawks.
