John,

Earlier this month, I had a chance to meet with educators and administrators across the Commonwealth to talk about school reopenings and, generally, the road ahead for Virginians as we face this COVID-19 pandemic. To put it plainly, a lot of people are worried.

What I heard during the Town Hall echoed what I've heard in speaking to students, parents, teachers and administrators across the district. Everyone wants to get back to school as soon as possible, but everyone also realizes that safety is a must. In trying to plan around all of the challenges that COVID poses to our schools and communities, many are realizing that we must be prepared for the possibility that in-classroom learning may not be practical this fall.

In so many ways, engaging with concerned citizens in a moment of challenge is the essence of this role. Families across the district are deciding where they land in terms of their risk tolerance--their own way of balancing the potential risk to their physical and financial well-being. In an unprecedented challenge, there's no universal right or wrong, but you have to have a set of guiding principles to arrive at a decision. My guiding principles come from my profession: first, do no harm.

To make sure we do no harm, we must develop comprehensive plans for all scenarios. We must engage with our communities. We must keep listening to experts, and communicate that information to the people. The residents of VA-05 expect a leader who exhibits these common-sense principles, and I will continue to reach out to folks across the districts to demonstrate that I'm engaging, that I'm communicating, and that I'm listening.

I trust that you'll continue to demand the accessibility and accountability of those who represent you--as well as those who aim to do so.
