Veteran Health Roadblocks

G’day John,

In the days after the Bondi Massacre my phone started ringing. It was veterans from all over the country.

For our Aussie veterans, some who spent years fighting in the middle east, this attack on home soil felt personal.

I gave a speech in the Senate last week, about the pain that the Bondi attack caused veterans.

It got intense over Christmas. I was getting calls from veterans who desperately needed urgent mental health support, and not just a visit, they needed a bed!

In late January, I went to Townsville and Brisbane to catch up with Veterans and advocates. It’s been more than a year since the Government said it would fix the problems in the veteran health system But this trip confirmed my worst fears. There are still too many problems with Veterans getting timely access to health services, particularly mental health support.

Last Tuesday, I asked the government what the hell are they were doing to address these issues. You can see those questions here

That afternoon, I gave a 5-minute speech telling the Senate about the road blocks and the hoops, that veterans, advocates and their doctors are still having jump through. You can see this speech on here

I gave the government and the Minister some breathing space, but that’s
over now!

Love Jac
