In Gaza, the freezing rain has turned makeshift camps into flood zones, where families are trapped and have no escape from the cold.
In the struggle for survival, women and girls often bear the brunt of cold weather crises while pregnant, giving birth, or menstruating with no access to reproductive health services or essential supplies.
"If we don't die from the war, we're dying from the cold," said Nariman , a mother whose newborn daughter, Sila , tragically died of hypothermia at just 20 days old.
When food is scarce, mothers are the last to eat, if at all. When space is limited, women and girls are left without shelter and are the most vulnerable to hypothermia, disease, and violence. Without access to basic supplies, they are left to navigate the harshest conditions imaginable with nothing but their resilience.
For many of the 55,000 pregnant women in Gaza, the joy of a new life is overshadowed by a singular, terrifying question: Where will my baby be born?
“I thought I would have to give birth in a tent,” said Rana , a displaced mother who went into labor during a winter storm. In a shattered health system, mothers like Rana are arriving at UNFPA health facilities exhausted, malnourished, and terrified.
But because of generous gifts from supporters, Rana did not have to give birth alone.
She was able to reach a hospital where midwives like Nabila and Heyam are working around the clock.
150 babies are born every day in Gaza, yet essentials like water, soap, and electricity are scarce.

"We in the field represent hope for women amid this darkness," midwife Heyam explained .
For many pregnant women, the only thing standing between life and death is the courage of a midwife. Midwives like Heyam and Nabila are walking long distances through the freezing rain and mud to reach women in labor. They are stabilizing mothers suffering from life-threatening hemorrhages and performing newborn resuscitation with almost no equipment.
But they cannot provide that hope without the tools to do their jobs.
