I joined my Democratic colleagues outside ICE headquarters in Washington, D.C., to demand Secretary Kristi Noem’s resignation.
Secretary Noem’s Department of Homeland Security has gone too far. Under her leadership, ICE agents are being directed to violate our Constitution and target people based on the color of their skin, their accent, or the work they do.
This hits close to home for me. As we see ICE agents ripping children away from their parents, taking elders from their homes, and killing U.S. citizens in cold blood on our streets, I think about my own upbringing and my community. I am the son of two Mexican immigrants, the father of a three-year-old, and the representative of one of the most diverse districts in the country. They are targeting people who look like me and anyone else who doesn’t meet their narrow definitions of “American.”
A year ago, when ICE raids first began in Los Angeles, I warned that this would become dangerous and that L.A. would be the first city to be targeted, but not the last. It has only gotten worse. The stakes could not be higher. If this lawlessness continues, more people will be threatened, harmed, or killed. That is why Democrats, from moderates to progressives, are united in holding Secretary Noem accountable for her dangerous behavior and removing her from office. She must resign. If not, we will impeach her.
