It’s easy to lose sight of what we’re fighting for, as we must continually fight back against attacks on our rights and our humanity.

We are fighting for the right to breathe clean air, the right to engage in free speech, the right to unionize, and the right to affordable utilities and housing.

We’re doing all of this while simultaneously fighting back against a lawless administration that is killing our people in the streets, violating our rights in plain sight and behind closed doors, and holding our neighbors in detention camps against their right to due process.

In the midst of the chaos of Donald Trump’s federal government, we must never forget the power of our voices together.

As a former immigration and social justice and immigration attorney, and the daughter of immigrants, I will never stop demanding a just and humane immigration process in the U.S. This includes holding ICE accountable for its murders and abuses of our neighbors and it includes fighting back against Trump’s racist travel ban.

During my time in Congress, I’ve introduced policies to free immigrants from ICE detention and to protect immigrant families. I’ve been pushing for years to hold ICE accountable for human rights abuses that include forced sterilizations, widespread sexual assault, and intentional medical neglect.

We’re also fighting back against an administration that is enriching billionaires and massive corporations at the expense of our access to healthcare, nutrition, and housing. That’s why I just introduced the Defund the Billionaires, Fund Our Communities Resolution, demanding Congress moves with urgency to tax the rich as well as large corporations, and reinvest those tax dollars right back into our communities.

In the midst of the terror being perpetrated on our communities, there is still light. I recently met with leadership at the Children’s Center in Detroit and toured the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, which provide thriving programs for children and families.

It’s important to remember that even as the Trump administration is using our tax dollars to fund ICE’s illegal terror campaign and detention camps, our tax dollars can also bring so much good to our communities, through critical investments in children and our future.
