Climate crisis is a human rights issue

Dear John,

The climate crisis is increasingly shaping headlines, political debates and daily conversations. The impacts on our natural world are widely understood. The entirely inter-related devastation that it is causing for humanity makes it an urgent human rights issue.

Human rights are intimately linked to the climate crisis. Global warming harmfully impacts our rights, including the rights to life, health, food, water, housing and livelihoods. Here are just some of the ways our human rights are under threat.

Our Right to life

Extreme weather-related events, like storms, floods, wildfires and droughts are becoming increasingly severe because of global warming. The World Health Organization predicts that the climate crisis will cause 250,000 deaths per year between 2030 and 2050, due to malaria, malnutrition, diarrhoea and heat stress.

Our right to life

Our Right to housing

Our Right to housing

Extreme weather events like floods and wildfires destroy people’s homes, leaving them displaced. And rising sea-levels threaten the homes of millions of people around the world in low-lying territories and coastal communities.

Our Right to water and sanitation

A combination of factors such as melting snow and ice, reduced rainfall, higher temperatures and rising sea-levels show that the climate crisis is impacting water resources. Extreme weather can damage water and sanitation infrastructure, leaving behind contaminated water and thus contributing to the spread of water-borne diseases.

Our Right to water and sanitation

Our Right to health

The climate crisis increases the risk of injury, disease and death due to more intense heatwaves and fires. Falling food production leads to higher food prices and hunger. Children exposed to traumatic events such as natural disasters, exacerbated by the climate crisis, can suffer from post-traumatic stress disorders.

Given the urgency of this issue, we will deepen our involvement in this fight by galvanizing the human rights community as it is clear that the climate crisis poses a real threat to our basic rights.

And as always, we need your help. Now is the time that your support matters most. Find out more about the work Amnesty International is doing to tackle climate change – one of the major human rights challenges of our time.
