“More and more studies show that kids are actually stoppers of the disease and they don’t get it and transmit it themselves, so… the default should be getting back to school kids in person, in the classroom.”
— Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, in an interview on “The Conservative Circus” (iHeart radio), July 16
Friend,
The science is clear. This statement from DeVos is absolutely false.
And to spread this misinformation betrays the health and well-being of the students, teachers, and school staff that she took an oath to protect.
While I wholeheartedly understand the desire to return to normalcy and reopen our schools, reopening won't be safe just because Trump and DeVos say it is. We have to actually take the steps necessary to protect our kids, our educators, and their families.
That's why I'm calling on the Senate to stop stalling and pass the HEROES Act to provide our educators with the resources needed to safely reopen our schools in the face of COVID-19. And I'm counting on you to become one of the 5,000 people I need to speak out alongside me before midnight.
Before demanding that schools reopen, we must listen to educators, parents, and public health experts. And they've made it clear that our schools need resources to ensure everyone stays safe and healthy when they return to their classrooms.
That's why every politician demanding that local officials reopen schools should be fighting to pass the HEROES Act. But we know Trump's allies will continue to put politics over public health, so it's our duty to demand the Senate pass this critical bill.
Thank you so much for lending your voice to this important fight,
Dick
