Hi John, it’s Rep. Zoe Lofgren.
Last week, House and Senate Republicans re-introduced the SAVE Act, or the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act.” Let me be clear: This is another blatant attempt at voter suppression by Republicans.
The SAVE Act promises to require “documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.” But let’s take a look at what it actually does:
❌ It requires a passport or birth certificate to vote, disenfranchising huge blocks of eligible voters including the 21 million Americans who lack access to these registration documents (that’s over 9% of voting age citizens!).
❌ It threatens online voter registration AND vote-by-mail, making it significantly harder for the millions of Americans who rely on these systems to make their vote count.
❌ And it requires regular voter roll purges, which historically block eligible Americans from voting by incorrectly wiping them from the records.
John, I believe that we should make it easier for Americans to participate in our democracy, not put up ridiculous hurdles to disenfranchise our constituents. That’s why I voted against this bill the last time it was introduced, and I’ll continue to fight against it and push for new legislation that expands voting rights and protections instead of erasing them.
If you’re with me and want to see an end to these far-right attacks on our democracy, then please donate to my campaign today to re-elect me and more Democrats who will stand up for your rights.
