John,
I recently made a visit to American Roots, a Maine business that uplifts immigrant workers and makes union-made goods right here at home.
This is also where, as a leader working for Governor Mills, I helped launch Maine's Office of New Americans. The Office's charge is to help immigrants better engage in our workforce and communities, and overcome barriers. I am incredibly proud of this work, and even more committed to protecting it and expanding it as governor.
Over the last few weeks, the workers at American Roots have been targeted by ICE, with agents circling the parking lot to intimidate people simply because they are immigrants. But Mainers showed up. A community came together to make sure every worker could come to work and leave safely every day.
No one should have to live in fear just to earn a paycheck. While I wish my visit to American Roots was not because of ICE's threats in Maine, I am deeply inspired by the way Mainers continue to look out for one another.
Maine takes care of its own. If you agree that all of our workers deserve dignity, safety, and respect, sign the petition and demand an end to ICE intimidation of working families who call Maine home.
Thanks for standing with us,
Hannah Pingree
