VIDEO OF THE DAY: Trump makes racist Obama video scandal 10x worse

So let's get this straight. In less than a day, the official positions of the Trump administration on the disgustingly racist video depicting the Obama family as apes has gone from 1) it was a Lion King meme and stop being so sensitive, snowflakes to 2) it was a rogue staffer to 3) Trump did it but he didn't know and he won't apologize because the rest of the video about 2020 Big Lie election conspiracy was good. From top to bottom, just an absolutely disgraceful show of affairs from every level of the Trump administration, whose shamelessness is only matched by their malignance.

DHS warned its independent watchdog that Noem can kill its investigations, senator says
The Department of Homeland Security’s general counsel warned the agency’s independent watchdog that DHS Secretary Kristi Noem asserts that she has the power to unilaterally kill their investigations, according to a new letter sent by Illinois Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth to Noem. Duckworth says she also learned the IG’s office was also asked on Jan. 29 to disclose “every active audit, inspection and criminal investigation,” which the lawmaker writes is “extremely unusual, perhaps even unprecedented.” She wrote, “I fear that repeated tacit threats from your Office of the Secretary to DHS OIG may have already succeeded in weakening DHS OIG’s operational independence- as evidenced by DHS OIG’s unusual lack of activity and engagement in the days that followed the fatal shooting of U.S. citizen Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents.”

MAGA Speaker Mike Johnson's Congressional majority is down to just ONE VOTE.

Flip the House: We have a very real opportunity to flip the house and finally put some clamps on Donald Trump's reign of terror and chaos this November, but it's not going to be easy. Trump has made it clear that there's nothing he won't do to try to tilt the scales in his favor, so we need to win by a decisive enough majority that there's no way he can pull any shenanigans. We've put together a donation page that will split any gifts between a group of Democratic candidates all locked in close, winnable House races, and every dollar might mean the difference between democracy or fascism. Will you chip in to help retake our country and stop Trump in his tracks?

Epstein revelations have toppled top figures in Europe while US fallout is more muted
A prince, an ambassador, senior diplomats, top politicians. All brought down by the Jeffrey Epstein files. And all in Europe, rather than the United States. The huge trove of Epstein documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice has sent shock waves through Europe’s political, economic and social elites — dominating headlines, ending careers and spurring political and criminal investigations. Former U.K. Ambassador to Washington Peter Mandelson was fired and could go to prison. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces a leadership crisis over the Mandelson appointment. Senior figures have fallen in Norway, Sweden and Slovakia. And, even before the latest batch of files, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, brother of King Charles III, lost his honors, princely title and taxpayer-funded mansion. A few high-profile Americans have faced repercussions over their friendly ties with Epstein. Most prominent is former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, who went on leave from academic positions at Harvard University late last year. Brad Karp quit last week as chair of top U.S. law firm Paul Weiss after revelations in the latest batch of documents, and the National Football League said it would investigate Epstein’s relationship with New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, who exchanged sometimes crude emails with Epstein about potential dates with adult women. Other U.S. Epstein associates have not yet faced severe sanction, including former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, who exchanged hundreds of texts with Epstein, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who accepted an invitation to visit Epstein’s private island, and tech billionaire Elon Musk, who discussed visiting the island in emails, but says he never made the trip.

Purported Nancy Guthrie ransom note demanded bitcoin. Could it be tracked?
The disappearance of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy Guthrie, includes a tantalizing clue: an apparent ransom note that demanded payment in bitcoin. The note, which is being taken seriously by investigators, included a deadline of 5 p.m. Thursday, although it didn't specify a time zone. If the payment wasn't made, the note specified another deadline of Monday, investigators said Thursday. The demand for bitcoin raises questions about whether the cryptocurrency could be used to hide a kidnapper's identity, given the financial product's semi-anonymous nature. Experts tell CBS News that law enforcement officials can track down information about the people or organizations behind crypto transactions, increasing the chances that the ransom demand could produce possible leads in the Guthrie case.

Epstein cellmate claims Trump administration wanted pervert powerbroker "dead"
Jeffrey Epstein’s prison cellmate claims to have evidence that the Trump administration wanted the disgraced financier dead and left him unprotected “on purpose,” according to a document obtained by the Daily Beast. Nicholas Tartaglione, a quadruple murderer and former police officer, filed a pardon/commutation petition last summer in which he claimed that Epstein was deliberately exposed to violence in the hope that he would not survive long enough to stand trial. Prior to Epstein’s death on Aug. 10, 2019, which officials ruled a suicide, jail bosses decided that America’s most high-profile prisoner should share a cell with an accused mass murderer for reasons that have never been explained.
