There’s one thing all 343 members of Parliament can agree on: pay raises.

On April 1, all members of Parliament will take another pay raise, ranging from an extra $8,800 to $17,600. Once again, taxpayers are the butt of their April Fools' joke.

But it’s not all bad news for taxpayers this week.

You pushed the Carney government to make a major retreat from its ban on the sale of new gas and diesel vehicles.

All that and more in this week’s Taxpayer Waste Watch. Enjoy

Franco.

MPs pad their pockets with YOUR money

How would your life change if you got an automatic pay raise of $10,000 each year? Most Canadians don’t know what that feels like. But members of Parliament do.

MPs take an automatic pay raise every year on April 1.

MPs will take an extra $8,800 to $17,600 this year, according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation’s estimates.

Prime Minister Mark Carney told you to brace for “sacrifices” only a couple months ago.

Meanwhile, Carney’s rubberstamping pay raises for all MPs. A backbench MP will collect a $218,600 salary after this April’s raise. A minister will collect $322,700 and the prime minister will take home $437,200.

In the real world, when the boss says it’s time for “sacrifice,” that means no more pay raises.

But Ottawa isn’t the real world.

Every year, about 80 per cent of Canadians oppose the MP pay raise, according to polling.

And every year your MP ignores what you say and instead stuffs their pockets with more of your money.

Real leadership would mean MPs cutting their pay. At the very least, politicians should put an end to the pay raises until the government stops borrowing money and starts paying down the debt.

It’s not fair to make you pay more for the government’s debt so politicians can take more money.

Franco’s note: You can send Ottawa’s politicians a message that you don’t want them padding their pockets with more of your money by adding your name to the PETITION: No MP pay raise.

Nearly all federal bureaucrats take a pay hike

Speaking of pay raises …

Not only are you paying for politician pay raises, but you’re also paying more money so nearly every federal bureaucrat can take a pay raise.

A total of 385,433 federal employees took a pay raise in 2024, the last year in which data is available for.

Just 0.15 per cent of all federal bureaucrats took a pay cut.

The bureaucrat pay raises show why all MPs should be opposing their own pay hikes.

When MPs stuff their own pockets with higher pay, the bureaucrats demand the same treatment.

Government union bosses pointed to “the yearly salary increases of senators and members of Parliament” as a reason why bureaucrats should take more money from you.

And the government bureaucracy is costing you big time.

The bureaucracy now consumes more than half of the government’s day-to-day spending.

Politicians can’t fix federal finances unless they shrink the federal bureaucracy.

But MPs won’t have the moral authority to force the bureaucracy to take a cut when they can’t even say NO to another helping of taxpayer cash for themselves.

You need political leaders to stick up for your wallet and put an end to the government entitlement culture in Ottawa.

Because right now, everyone in Ottawa seems to think they’re entitled to more of your money simply because they’re on the taxpayer payroll.

You force Ottawa to make major retreat from gas and diesel car ban
Prime Minister Mark Carney just ended the government’s formal ban on the sale of new gas and diesel vehicles by 2035.

Carney didn’t retreat because he wanted to. You and thousands of taxfighters forced the government to back down.

But the fight isn’t over.

Instead of simply shredding the ban, Carney is rolling out billions of dollars in corporate welfare to auto makers.

Carney is also forcing you to subsidize other people’s shiny new electric vehicles.

Carney is also bringing in costly regulations to try to push automakers to reach “75 per cent EV sales by 2035 and 90 per cent EV sales by 2040.”

The fight is not over.

But you should take pride in forcing Ottawa to make a major retreat from its gas and diesel car ban.

Thousands of taxfighters like you sent emails to politicians, completed the government’s consultations and signed petitions.

And because you took action you forced the government to back down.

Thank you for all your work.

We will keep fighting with you to end the corporate welfare, subsidies and costly regulations.

VIDEO: Everyone is turning on Carney’s gun ban

Premiers, police forces and almost everyone else are pushing back against Ottawa’s gun grab.

That’s because it will cost you a boatload of money, but won’t make your community safer.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation breaks down ways taxfighters like you can keep fighting against Ottawa’s gun ban and confiscation scheme. You can watch (and share) that video by clicking the YouTube link below.
