Putting Students First:
Guidance for San Francisco Unified School District Families Ahead of Monday
Dear Neighbors,
As many of you may have heard, educators are planning to strike on Monday, February 8th.
I am urging both San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) to continue to stay at the bargaining table to come up with a solution that prioritizes students and their families.
In the meantime, I’d like to provide SFUSD parents with answers to help them prepare for the week ahead.
Sincerely, Stephen Sherrill
District 2 Supervisor Frequently Asked Questions:
Question: Will schools be open on Monday? When will we learn more information?
Answer: Today, Friday, February 6th, SFUSD administrators announced that schools will be closed in the event of a strike. Schools will close if SFUSD cannot ensure adequate staffing levels and other conditions necessary to ensure students are well cared for and safe. SFUSD and UESF will meet again tomorrow, Saturday, February 7th, and we hope to have more information to share on Sunday, February 8th. Question: Will students be penalized for not coming to school during the strike?
Answer: No. Question: What should families with kids in SFUSD do to prepare?
Answer: SFUSD officials are urging families to make contingency plans in the event a strike leads to school closures. This may include arranging school-day supervision, after-care, and meals.
Families who already use after-school programs are encouraged to check in ahead of time to see whether those programs would offer full-day care if schools are closed on Monday. Question: If schools do close, will the City step in to do anything to help affected children?
Answer: The City will offer free lunches to students who typically rely on their schools for access to meals and will allow some city-sponsored after-school programs to provide services all day. We will provide more information soon. Additional Resources: For your reference, family resources for SFUSD families are available on SFUSD's Information and Resources for Families page.
Learn More and Get Involved: The SF Parents Coalition is a well-established advocacy group representing thousands of families from schools across SFUSD. Families who want to stay informed and engaged are encouraged to visit the Coalition’s website for regular updates on bargaining developments throughout the weekend.
