The MEGA Act: Restoring Trust in Our Elections

Wisconsin's own Congressman Bryan Steil, as Chairman of the House Administration Committee, recently unveiled the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act. This is a comprehensive, commonsense package of election reforms that sets clear baseline standards for how states run federal elections. The bill aims to boost voter confidence, strengthen election integrity, and ensure our processes remain easy to vote in but hard to cheat. This is a much-needed response to gaps in current federal law, particularly weak enforcement on voter list maintenance, by bringing clarity, accountability, and uniform safeguards nationwide.

At its heart, the MEGA Act implements proven, straightforward guidelines: requiring photo ID to vote, verifying citizenship during voter registration, strengthening routine voter roll maintenance to remove ineligible names, mandating that mail-in ballots be received by Election Day, ensuring auditable paper ballots for every vote, and banning risky practices like ballot harvesting, ranked-choice voting, and universal vote-by-mail. These measures build on successful models and align with core GOP priorities to protect the ballot box while keeping participation accessible for lawful American voters.

Fair, verifiable elections are the bedrock of our democracy, and clean voter rolls are a legal obligation, not an option. Election security reform is long overdue, and strict rules like those in the MEGA Act are essential to restoring public trust after years of concerns.
