Legislative Update – February 6, 2026
Dear Neighbors –
I hope you are hanging in there and taking care of yourselves and each other.
As Trump’s promised “day of reckoning and retribution” stretches into its third month, the reality on-the-ground has not changed since Greg Bovino left and Tom Homan came to town promising a “change of tone” and a drawdown of 700 ICE agents – leaving over 2,300 agents in our state. The bottom line is that an out-of-control President and federal government continues to act lawlessly without warrants, rules, or respect for the constitutional rights of Minnesotans. Operation Metro Surge must end, and ICE must leave our state.
To our communities, to all of you who are in our schools, protecting our neighborhoods, participating in mutual aid and care, and on our streets -- I am so proud to be your neighbor. Thank you for holding the line for our neighbors, our state, and the whole country.
Your strength, courage, resilience, and heart in the face of this horror is inspiring. And I will continue to stand with you -- holding the line for our communities, our country and our constitution -- as long as it takes.

State Lawmakers Stand Together
We aren’t the first American city or community to experience the Trump administration’s federal occupation. We know that Minnesota is Trump’s testing ground for what happens next, and it is also the place where people around the country started to believe their eyes. [ [link removed] ]
Last week, we were joined at the State Capitol by 50 lawmakers from 15 states, who came to see firsthand how Minnesotans are protecting each other because they know iIt is an inflection point for our country; and where we are mobilizing our power as a state, and as an American people, to put this lawless federal authoritarian power grab to an end.
50 lawmakers from 15 states stand with Minnesota legislators in the State Capitol
We stood together [ [link removed] ] and know we cannot do this alone. We called on every U.S. Senator to vote against any budget that funds the lawless ICE and border patrol; we demanded our colleagues in Minnesota, here and across the aisle use our power to stop this federal assault on our communities and our constitutional rights: and we asked state leaders in every corner of this country to stand with us to hold the line.

Supporting our Neighbors
Two months into Operation Metro Surge, Minnesotans across the state are experiencing significant economic hardships related to the hostile occupation of our communities. Businesses have closed, workers are unable to go to work safely, and families have lost income. The result has been a significant increase in renters who are falling behind on rent with further potential harm on the horizon if immigration officials continue to occupy our state.
Donald Trump and ICE agents have created a moral catastrophe, but also an economic catastrophe that is hurting businesses, families, and renters. Minnesotans are stepping up to support their neighbors and every level of government should act with that same urgency to keep Minnesotans safe and stable in their homes.
That’s why DFLers are introducing a housing action plan [ [link removed] ] that includes recommendations that all levels of government can take to prevent an eviction crisis. Our plan calls on President Trump to End Operation Metro Surge, and proposes $50 million in emergency rental assistance and state policy changes to make it easier for renters to make rent and avoid eviction. In addition, we will continue supporting locally-driven solutions already making a difference to keep Minnesotans safe and stable in their homes.
For those in need, you can find resources available from the City of Minneapolis [ [link removed] ], Hennepin County, [ [link removed] ] and a collection of other resources from Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota [ [link removed] ].

Looking Towards the Future
At the same time that our neighbors are marching in the street, taking collective action to care for and protect each other, time continues to march on and legislators are preparing for the upcoming 2026 Legislative Session, which begins in less than two weeks on February 17.
I’m committed to doing everything in my power this upcoming session to use the power we have as state representatives to keep our neighbors safe and defend our democracy. My focus will be on protecting Minnesotans from this illegal occupation, addressing the epidemic of guns that shattered our community, protecting our Democracy and standing up for the power of the people.
In the coming weeks, I’ll share more about the legislation I’m working on -- including banning weapons of war, banning surveillance pricing, a corporate power reset, and continuing to protect our state and workers from misclassification fraud.
In a tied House, we need Republican votes to pass any legislation. DFLers are ready to step up and fight to unrig our economy and democracy, and we will hold Republicans to account if they continue to put the interests of the President and his corporate donors over the people we are elected to serve.
