Whales are the giants of our oceans — mysterious, highly intelligent, and vital to the health of our marine ecosystems. They breathe the same air we do and communicate through complex noises that can travel across entire basins.
But beneath the surface, these magnificent creatures are in a fight for survival.
The stats are staggering:
* 6 out of 13 "great whale" species are now endangered or vulnerable.
* 25% of all cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) face the threat of extinction.
* 300,000 whales and dolphins are killed every year by fishing gear entanglement, ship strikes, and habitat loss.
Our SEEC Members in Congress are taking action! SEEC Co-Chair Rep. Doris Matsui has just introduced the updated Whale CHARTS Act. This bipartisan bill will use cutting-edge technology to protect whales by developing real-time movement maps, species surveys, and advanced detection systems to keep them out of harm's way.
