Friend,
Can we call a spade a spade? These were murders, conducted in plain view and recorded on camera. The world watched as federal agents shot Alex Pretti and Renée Good as they exercised their constitutional rights.
Donald Trump’s spin machine is trying desperately to tell you otherwise. They called Renée Good a domestic terrorist. We know that she was a poet and a mother of three who dropped her kids off at school, then volunteered to monitor ICE activity in her community.
They told us that Alex Pretti brandished his weapon and wanted to “massacre law enforcement.” The video shows us that he was trying to help a woman who had been pepper-sprayed, disarmed, and then shot ten times by federal officers. We now know that he was a devoted ICU nurse who loved his country.
The horrors we saw out of Minneapolis shook me to my core. They reminded me of the chaos and bloodshed we see on the news whenever third-world dictators crack down on their citizens. That’s why Democrats in Washington are refusing to fund ICE’s un-American violence.
This week, I voted to end the shutdown, reopen the government, and separate funding for the Department of Homeland Security from all other government appropriations. In less than two weeks, funding for that department, which oversees ICE, will expire. That puts my colleagues and me in a strong negotiating position, and we'll be hard at work demanding meaningful reform from Kristi Noem’s agency.
We've made our demands clear. Federal agents should be prohibited from wearing masks. They need to clearly identify themselves to the public and wear body-worn cameras. DHS agents cannot enter private property without a judicial warrant. ICE must end racial profiling and implement a reasonable use of force policy to end the senseless violence. No more paramilitary equipment for ICE, and no more immigration crackdowns at hospitals, schools, childcare centers, churches, courts, and other sensitive locations.
The American taxpayers refuse to bankroll Trump’s violent agenda.
– Jim
