John -
Georgia has become Republicans’ testing ground for their voter suppression efforts.
This is no accident. In fact, a recent New York Times investigation into the complete breakdown of our voting systems during the June primary said, “It was the historical failings of the secretary of state’s office that got Georgia into this position in the first place.”
This decades-long effort to disenfranchise Georgia voters can be traced directly back to my opponent. Karen Handel was the original architect of Republicans’ voter suppression tactics in Georgia.
She became Secretary of State in 2007. And according to the New York Times, Karen Handel “soon set about making it harder to vote. The newly elected secretary, Karen Handel, implemented an ‘exact match’ system that could disqualify voters for minute differences between their registration forms and other government documents.”
This law violated the Voting Rights Act and disproportionately impacted communities of color. This is the agenda she wants to take to Congress to silence voters nationwide.
Our democracy will not survive if our elected leaders don’t understand that our citizens have a right to vote. Plain and simple.
All my best,
Lucy
