Not a single Republican showed up to hear Renee Good’s brothers testify after an ICE agent killed her in Minneapolis. Nor did they show up for the testimony of U.S. Citizens who had been beaten, tased, had the windows broken in their cars and violently pulled from their cars even when they were disabled. Nor did they offer a defense for their deportation campaign from other victims of ICE brutality at a congressional forum this Tuesday. “They were murdered by their own government. They were killed in cold blood,” said U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT).

Republicans refusing to show up comes as no surprise.
The Trump administration has actively shielded ICE agents from accountability for their lawlessness, while circulating heavily doctored and racially charged images of peaceful protestors concerned about their community’s safety. Instead of defending their actions, Republican lawmakers are avoiding the very communities harmed by their indiscriminate and violent deportation agenda and saying patently ridiculous statements that these rogue officers have “absolutely immunity” as if we live in a police state.

Speaker Mike Johnson, who apparently doesn’t understand that judicial warrants are required by the Fourth Amendment if you invade someone’s home, has refused to mandate that ICE agents secure judicial warrants, maintaining that administrative warrants are enough to justify home raids. His reasoning? That Republicans and the Trump administration do not have the judges or the time to ensure people receive their Fourth Amendment rights. If they have the time to raid immigrant homes and American cities, they certainly have the time to ensure every person receives their Fourth Amendment protections.

Trump’s brutal immigration policies are destroying lives and Republicans know it. As they continue to hide from and deny the consequences of their cruelty, more and more Americans are calling for an end to the administration’s wanton violence. It’s time that Republican congress members and the lawlessness they support are held responsible for their actions and accountable for their silence.
