House Republicans are preparing to vote next week on one of the most
aggressive voter suppression bills we have seen in years. H.R. 7296, the
so-called SAVE America Act, is being fast tracked to the House floor as
part of a renewed push to restrict the right to vote ahead of a crucial
midterm election year.

This bill is SAVE Act 2.0. It is the same failed, deeply unpopular scheme
Republicans tried to ram through last year until public outrage forced
them to pull it back. Now they are trying again, hoping to move quickly
before people fully grasp what is at stake.

[ [link removed] ]Add your name now to tell Congress to reject the SAVE Act in all its
forms. >>

If passed, the SAVE Act would require most Americans to show documents
like a passport or birth certificate just to register to vote or update
their registration. More than 21 million Americans do not have ready
access to those documents. Nearly half of Americans do not have a passport
at all. Millions of women whose married names do not match their birth
certificates would face new hurdles just to make their voices heard.
Younger voters, voters of color, rural voters, people with disabilities,
and low-income Americans would be hit first and hardest.

Republicans know exactly what they are doing. They are pushing a policy
that would block millions of eligible citizens from voting because they
are afraid of an electorate that can hold them accountable. That is why
they are rushing this bill forward now, before a high turnout midterm
election year.

freedom to vote. >>

The SAVE Act would also inject chaos into our elections. It would
dismantle online voter registration, mail registration, and
community-based registration drives that millions rely on. It would saddle
state and local election officials with massive new unfunded mandates and
expose them to civil and criminal penalties for honest mistakes. It would
invite reckless voter purges and confusion that would inevitably keep
eligible American citizens from voting.

And all of this would be done to “solve” a problem that does not exist.
Noncitizen voting is already illegal and vanishingly rare, a fact
confirmed again and again by state investigations, including in Republican
led states. The SAVE Act is not about protecting elections. It is about
suppressing participation.

We have stopped this before. When Republicans tried to force the SAVE Act
through last year, people across the country spoke out and stopped them.
That same pressure is needed again right now.

This vote is coming fast. The window to act is now. Congress must vote no
on the SAVE Act.
