Greetings!

I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap of what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives.

The Working Families Tax Cuts, which my House Republican colleagues and I voted to pass and President Donald Trump signed into law, simplifies the tax code and provides real relief for American taxpayers.

Thanks to this historic legislation, American families will pay NO TAXES on the first $31,500 they earn, and for single individuals and married individuals filing separately, the standard deduction is now $15,750. Locking in the standard deduction simplifies taxes for 91% of taxpayers, saves Americans an estimated 210 million hours in paperwork and $13 billion in compliance costs each year, and is projected to increase the average refund by $1,000 this spring.

The Working Families Tax Cuts also suspended the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) government-run Direct File program, ensuring the IRS is not both preparing and filing Americans’ taxes.

We are committed to saving you time and keeping more money in your pockets!

This Week in Washington D.C.

Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes "YES" to End Partial Government Shutdown

This week, I voted “YES” on H.R. 7148, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026, officially ending the partial government shutdown and funding nearly all federal agencies through September 30, 2026, with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) being funded through February 13, 2026.

This legislation strengthens our national defense, supports education and healthcare systems, modernizes our transportation and infrastructure, supports small businesses, and reasserts peace through strength on the world stage. Specifically, this funding package delivers real results for the American people by ending funding for woke programming, cutting $10 billion in wasteful foreign aid, creating a new America First Opportunity Fund, reducing funding for weaponized Internal Revenue Service (IRS) programs, fully funding pay raises for our servicemembers, and making historic investments in American shipbuilding.

Importantly, this bill secures $2 million in community project funding for runway improvements at Sugar Land Regional Airport (SGA) in Sugar Land, Texas. These funds will be used to rehabilitate SGR’s Runway 17-35, addressing safety concerns for pilots, passengers, and the surrounding community. This investment will help ensure safer travel and stronger infrastructure for families and businesses across Texas’s 22nd Congressional District.

While we still have work to do regarding funding for DHS through the end of fiscal year (FY) 2026, more than 95 percent of the federal government is funded through full-year appropriations. My House Republican colleagues and I are dedicated to restoring fiscal responsibility and sanity and moving the America First agenda forward.

Rep. Troy E. Nehls Attends House Judiciary Hearing on "Europe's Threat to American Speech and Innovation: Part II"

This week, I attended the House Judiciary Committee and emphasized the European Union's (EU) overreach that directly affects my constituents in the 22nd Congressional District of Texas. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) are nothing but a threat to American sovereignty and energy independence. These extraterritorial environmental, social, and governance (ESG) mandates force Texas oil and gas companies to comply with burdensome reporting and due diligence rules tied to environmental treaties we never ratified.

With over 4,000 companies affected, including thousands in our energy sector, these laws impose massive compliance costs, deter investment in liquified natural gas (LNG) exports, where America leads in the world, and threaten thousands of high-paying Texas jobs in drilling, refining, and clean energy projects.

Specifically, CS3D could cost the Texas economy over $68 billion in one-time compliance costs and over $1 trillion in potential lost revenue. Texas's manufacturing sector is forecasted to spend $26 billion in one-time compliance costs, in addition to annual compliance costs. CS3D could cost more than 63,500 Texas jobs, equivalent to a 0.4% increase in our state’s unemployment rate. Payroll losses could exceed $6 billion, and more than 490,000 Texas small businesses will be most affected because they lack the resources to comply. Simply put, this horrible legislation is a vehicle for the EU to impose an extraterritorial regulatory tax on U.S. industry.

I'm grateful President Donald Trump continues to take action by flagging these rules as threats to our trading relationship, securing commitments to limit their undue burdens on American companies, and standing ready to use tariffs and every tool necessary to defend our innovators from foreign overreach.

Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes “YES” on Disapproving the Action of the District of Columbia Council

Despite all the benefits of the Working Families Tax Cuts, the District of Columbia's (DC) Council enacted the D.C. Income and Franchise Tax Conformity and Revision Temporary Amendment Act of 2025. D.C.'s legislation effectively decouples the D.C. local tax code from specific federal tax-related provisions implemented by the Working Families Tax Cuts for the 2025 tax season, including no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and the increased standard deduction, blocking residents from reaping the benefits of this historic legislation and keeping them from receiving bigger paychecks.

This week, I voted “YES” on H.J. Res. 142, which exercises Congress's authority to disapprove and prohibit the enactment of the D.C. Income and Franchise Tax Conformity and Revision Temporary Amendment Act of 2025, which would deny D.C.'s residents and businesses the tax relief they deserve.

I'm proud to join my House Republican colleagues in stopping D.C.'s money grab and standing up for hardworking Americans.

Rep Troy E. Nehls Votes "YES" on Supporting our Veterans and Boosting Domestic Production

This week, I voted “YES” on legislation that supports our Veterans and secures our nation’s critical mineral supply, including:

  • H.R. 3123 - The Ernest Peltz Accrued Veterans Benefits Act, which improves the process of issuing pension benefits payments administered by the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) that are impacted by the death of the beneficiary. It would ensure that Veterans receive their accrued pension benefit in the event of a month-of-death claim, or if payment for the month of death has been issued.
  • H.R. 980 - The Veterans Readiness and Employment Improvement Act, which strengthens support for Veterans transitioning from military service to civilian life. The legislation improves the Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) program at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) by adding a dedicated hotline for faster assistance, expanding eligibility to include non-degree flight training programs, and streamlining education benefits to reduce red tape. It also removes the master’s degree requirement for VetSuccess on Campus (VSOC) counselors, helping the VA hire and retain more staff, reducing long wait times, and ensuring veterans receive timely guidance as they pursue education, employment, or entrepreneurship.
  • H.R. 4090, The Critical Mineral Dominance Act, which will strengthen America’s supply of critical and rare earth minerals and reduce dangerous reliance on foreign adversaries like China. The legislation directs the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) to assess the economic costs of mineral import dependence, fast-track priority domestic mining projects on federal lands, and report to Congress on barriers to expanding U.S. mineral production. By codifying key Trump Administration policies into law, this legislation will help boost domestic mining, create good-paying jobs, enhance national security, and ensure the United States remains competitive in the global economy.

These measures improve benefits for Veterans and their families, streamline career and education pathways for those transitioning to civilian life, and reduce our reliance on foreign adversaries by boosting domestic production. My House Republican colleagues and I will continue fighting to deliver commonsense solutions that put American industries, Veterans, and families first.

Rep. Troy E. Nehls Attends House Judiciary Markup

This week, I attended the House Judiciary Committee markup, where the committee advanced two key pieces of legislation:

  • H.R. 1028, the Protection of Women in Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, which restores appropriate eligibility requirements for amateur sports governing bodies, allowing them to prohibit biological males from participating in athletic events designated for women. This commonsense bill protects women from unfair competition that could undermine the opportunities for female athletes and the integrity of women's sports. Many female athletes have trained their entire lives to compete, and this legislation ensures a level playing field. I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of this bill.

  • H.J. Res 139 is a constitutional amendment that prohibits deficit spending by capping total federal expenditures to the average revenue collected over the past three years, adjusted for population growth and inflation, with exceptions for national emergencies and war. Any spending beyond this limit would require a two-thirds supermajority approval in Congress. Additionally, creating new taxes or increasing existing tax rates would also necessitate a two-thirds supermajority, preventing irresponsible tax increases.

Rep. Troy E. Nehls Meets with Fort Bend ISD Students

This week, I met with students from the Fort Bend Independent School District (ISD) in our nation’s capital. I enjoyed answering their questions and having them sit in on the House Judiciary Committee markup.

Always happy to see young Texans taking an interest in how our government works!

This Week in Texas' 22nd District

Rep. Troy E. Nehls' Fulshear District Office Hosts Service Academy Day

I'm hosting a Service Academy Day on Saturday, May 9, 2026. This event will allow all TX-22 to learn how to attend one of the United States Service Academies.

One of the privileges of serving in the United States House of Representatives is the opportunity to nominate outstanding young people from the 22nd Congressional District of Texas to be considered for appointment to our nation’s service academies.

Admission to a service academy is a two-tiered process. First, the candidate must apply and meet the minimum standards set by the individual academy. Second, the candidate must complete the congressional application to be considered for an interview with the nomination review board in our office. Please note that the ultimate selection of appointee’s rests solely with academy officials and is based on their competitive evaluation of all nominees.

In addition to staff from my office, representatives from all five academies (U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and U.S. Coast Guard Academy) and current academy cadets and midshipmen will be on hand to answer questions. Students, parents, and educators will be able to hear from and meet with representatives on a one-on-one basis to be informed about the excellent opportunities associated with attending these premier educational institutions and the careers they generate.

This forum is free; however, pre-registration is required and can be found on my website HERE. It will be held from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at the Rosenberg Civic Center.

We encourage students, parents, and educators to attend and take advantage of this valuable opportunity to learn more about these premier institutions and the careers they offer.

If you have any questions, please email [email protected] or call my district office at (346) 762-6600.

2026 Congressional Art Competition is Now Open

My office is now accepting Congressional Art Competition submissions through Friday, April 24th at 11:59pm CDT.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have participated in the nationwide competition.

The Congressional Art Competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and is open to all high school students in the 22nd Congressional District of Texas. The winning artwork of our district's competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol, and the winner will receive two plane tickets to our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C.

The rules, regulations, application, and checklist can be found HERE on my website.

The theme for 2026 is America250! The winner of this year’s Congressional Art Competition will be announced in early May 2026.

2026 Tax Filing Season and Online Tools and Resources

The IRS 2026 filing season opened January 26, 2026. Taxpayers must file 2025 returns by April 15, 2026. New tax provisions may affect credits, deductions, and filing requirements. Most returns are expected to be filed electronically.

Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs) are independent organizations that provide free or low-cost assistance to low-income taxpayers and individuals with limited English proficiency. They offer representation in IRS audits, appeals, collections, and court proceedings; help resolve tax account issues; assist with IRS notices; and educate taxpayers about their rights and responsibilities. Services may also include limited support with tax filing and compliance.
