John,
We have just 11 years to stop the climate crisis, but right now the leaders supposed to tackle this are asleep at the wheel.
That's why on September 20th, we're joining the global climate strike. Millions of people around the world will all be walking out of school and work on the same day to send a message to our political leaders that we can’t wait any longer for them to act on this crisis. We need them to join our fight for a Green New Deal, now.
This is your chance to be a part of something massive, and to broadcast our demand for a Green New Deal at a scale that our political leaders cannot ignore. Join our mass call tonight at 8:30pm EST to learn more and get ready to join or plan a strike near you.
The global climate strike on Sept 20th is just the first in a series of coordinated, nationwide climate strikes that we’ll be launching this fall. Read more about the full six-month strategy below:
Right now, we’re about to launch the most ambitious and challenging phase yet of our plan to win a Green New Deal. This email is gonna be a little longer than usual, but I hope you’ll take the time to read it.
Over the coming months, we’re going to hold a series of climate strikes where millions of people across the nation will all walk out of school and work on the same day. Here’s why:
Enacting the Green New Deal will be the largest project we’ve taken on as a country in decades, and perhaps ever. Scientists are crystal clear that to avoid catastrophe, we need “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.” [1]
We have seen this kind of massive change in our country only once or twice before, in times like the civil rights movement. Looking back, history shows us that societal transformation only comes when millions of people take to the streets to demand it.
So that’s what we’re going to do. Over the next six months, we’re going to execute a series of coordinated, nationwide strikes. When millions of people around the country walk out of school and work at the same time, we will disrupt the expected day-to-day functioning of society, making our movement and our demands impossible to ignore.
Get ready to join the biggest youth-led global demonstration in history. Join our mass call tonight at 8:30pm EST to hear all the details of our plan for the global climate strike, and to learn what you can do to be a part of it.
The campaign launches on September 20th, when we’ll join the global climate strike. This first strike will set the stage for all the work we’ll be doing for the next six months. It will be a global show of the power of our generation, with millions of young people and our allies striking on the same day in every country in the world.
To get ready, the first step is appointing strike captains in every Sunrise hub. They will recruit hundreds of new people to pledge to strike, and give them the tools they need to walk out. Each of those new people will bring their friends, and grow our movement more.
Then, on the day of the strike, millions of us will all walk out of school and work as a united force. We’ll then head straight to sit-ins and rallies at the offices of our local political leaders, where we’ll demand that they join us in our fight for a Green New Deal.
And at every step of the way--on each strike day, and as we recruit beforehand--we’ll be registering millions of young people to vote so that when 2020 comes, we can elect a President and Congress who will fight for our future.
These strikes could make history. Join the mass call tonight at 8:30pm EST to learn how you can be a part of them.
Through these strikes, we will show the political leaders of our nation our power. When they see that millions of people in every corner of the country are ready to drop everything and go on strike to demand a Green New Deal, we will prove that we are as powerful as the historic movements that have marched before us.
Varshini Prakash
P.S.
These strikes will take months of hard work coaching new organizers, building art, and sending out supplies. If they’re going to succeed, we need your support every step of the way. Can you chip in today to support the strikes?
