Dear John,
This week, the Senate’s version of a series of government funding bills came back to the House for a vote. The DHS funding bill was returned in the form of a two-week funding extension, otherwise known as a continuing resolution (CR), designed to give lawmakers more time to reach a bipartisan agreement.
I’m glad that the original DHS funding bill didn’t pass the Senate. The fact that this bill is back in the House gives Democrats a chance to negotiate and demand restrictions on this rogue agency.
That being said, the situation in Minnesota is top of mind for me right now. I’ve heard thousands of messages from folks back home urging me not to vote for ICE funding. I won’t vote for a single penny for Donald Trump and Kristi Noem’s ICE. Not even for two weeks. I was a no.
To be honest, I don’t trust a word out of their mouths. This administration’s efforts to rein in ICE in Minnesota have been halfhearted at best, dangerous at worst. Even this week, Tom Homan announced 700 ICE agents will be removed from Minnesota. The decision is a step in the right direction, but it’s not nearly enough. ICE needs to leave Minnesota entirely.
This administration is coming to grips with the fact that the American people won’t tolerate their cruelty and lawlessness. They continue to violate Minnesotans’ First, Second, Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights. And the public won’t stand for it.
Political opinions aside – this isn’t who we are as Americans. And this definitely isn’t what we stand for in Minnesota. I won’t stop fighting to stop the Administration’s terror campaign on our communities, and I won’t be supporting a cent for this DHS.
As always, take care of yourselves and look out for your neighbors. It’s what being a Minnesotan is all about.
Here’s what else I’ve been up to this week:
Protesting at the Department of Homeland Security in DC
This week I protested in front of the ICE headquarters in Washington D.C. to stand against the violence and cruelty of Kristi Noem’s rogue DHS.
Kristi Noem needs to go.

Establishing standards of care for ICE and CBP detainees
In 2025 alone, 53 people died in ICE and CBP custody. I hear stories every day of detainees being mistreated, denied lifesaving medication and abused.
I’m leading a bill with Rep. Raul Ruiz to ensure folks in ICE and CBP custody get the care they need – because everyone, regardless of their immigration status, deserves to be treated with dignity.
You can read more about my bill here.
Discussing what’s going on in Minnesota with my colleagues
This week I was a guest on the New Democrat Coalition’s podcast: The Fly In!
I talked with two of my colleagues, Rep. Marilyn Strickland and Rep. Marc Veasey, about what’s going on in Minnesota and how we can work together as House Democrats to stop Kristi Noem’s rogue DHS.

Behind the scenes:
Believe it or not, the podcast “studio” was actually just a makeshift setup in a Congressional office. Gotta work with what you’ve got!
Here’s a peek behind the scenes at what our "studio" looked like.

Until next time,
