For the fifth time since the coronavirus pandemic took hold in the United States, rent will be due in three days. At the very same time, millions of Americans — disproportionately Black, brown, and working-class — continue to struggle with a lack of healthcare, record unemployment, and instability.

From the very beginning, Jamaal has called for a rent moratorium until we get the coronavirus pandemic under control and housing as a human right — all under his New Deal For Housing.

And right now, we're excited to share some of that plan with you. When you finish reading, will you chip in $5 to our campaign and support Jamaal as we look towards November?

Jamaal's New Deal For Housing calls for a number of things, including:

• National Rent Control: Impose a cap on rent increases at 150% of consumer price index, or 3% — whichever is higher — giving renters security in their homes.

• Eviction Protections: Tenants must have the right to renew their lease and to organize for safe living conditions in their homes, without the fear of retaliatory eviction.

• Expanding Right to Counsel: With right to counsel in housing court, tenants would be provided with free legal advice when facing an eviction case. In New York City, Right to Counsel has reduced evictions in the ZIP codes where it has already been phased in.

• Investing in social and public housing: Recommit to public and social housing and ensure that everyone in New York's 16th District has a guaranteed home.

John, we deserve elected officials like Jamaal Bowman who believe housing is a human right. In Congress, Jamaal will push for bold, progressive change that meets our current moment. But our campaign is powered by the people, and it's on us to help him get there.
