John, Twenty years after Virginia added a ban on same-sex marriage to our Constitution, we finally have the chance to right that wrong!
Today, Governor Abigail Spanberger signed House Bill 612 (Cohen), finalizing the ballot language for the historic Marriage Equality Constitutional Amendment that will appear on the ballot this November! This marks a major milestone—but the final decision now rests with the people of Virginia.

This November, voters will be asked: Question: Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to: (i) remove the ban on same-sex marriage; (ii) affirm that two adults may marry regardless of sex, gender, or race; and (iii) require all legally valid marriages to be treated equally under the law?
This amendment would replace discrimination with dignity and ensure that every couple is treated equally—now and for generations to come.
🗳️ Voting will begin September 18, 2026, and run through Election Day on November 3, 2026. The Freedom to Marry amendment will be on the midterm election ballot along with amendments to enshrine reproductive right and restore voting rights for returning citizens—and your vote will matter.
Make sure you’re registered to vote now, and stay tuned for ways you can help us protect and expand marriage equality across the Commonwealth.Last
Lastly, THANK YOU for never giving up. Thanks to your decades-long advocacy, we now have the opportunity to finish the fight. Yours In The Movement,
