Dear john,
Welcome to the weekly edition of my newsletter. Here you'll find recaps of some of the most important things that happened in Washington and El Paso, my reactions, and news I'd love to bring to your attention.
In case you missed it this week:
My opposition to the $122 million DHS detention facilities
This week, I sent a letter to Kristi Noem and Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons over my opposition to the new immigration detention facilities in our community.
El Pasoans do not want more detention facilities. During a weekly meeting of the El Paso County Commissioner’s Court, over 200 El Paso County residents spoke out against the construction of further detention facilities in the area. I stand firmly with the wishes of my constituents, neighbors, and community and urge DHS to suspend any and all plans to build further detention facilities.
You can read my letter here.
My continued oversight of Camp East Montana
Last week, I did an oversight visit of Camp East Montana. DHS must immediately stop funneling $1.24 billion to the private company that runs Camp East Montana as they fail to meet federal standards, defraud the American taxpayer and allow conditions where a homicide has taken place.
CEM must be shut down now and the corporation running it must be investigated.
You can read my thoughts on my visit here.
