The Trump administration’s deregulatory agenda was a threat to our environment, public lands, and communities before COVID-19. But now it’s making the impacts of the pandemic even worse.

The New York Times recently reported that the administration is reversing no fewer than 100 environmental rules. And The Washington Post highlighted how the move to weaken the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) will have a particularly harsh impact on communities of color.

The proposed changes to NEPA will limit which major projects require environmental impact analysis, how that impact is calculated, and how long the public has to comment on the projects. These changes would gut one of the most effective ways Americans of color have pushed back against plans that could harm their health and environment.

During a time of such great danger to our collective public health and economic peril, particularly in Black and Latino communities that have been hit hardest by the pandemic, we need this administration to put people over polluters, not the other way around.
