Dear John,
Every February, we take time to honor and celebrate the profound impact Black Americans have had in shaping our nation. This year’s Black History Month theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” marks 100 years since the first organized effort to ensure Black history was preserved, studied, and shared.
That effort was rooted in the knowledge that history doesn’t speak for itself. It must be taught, protected, and passed on.
In Connecticut, Black leaders understood early on that telling the story was inseparable from shaping the future. In the mid-1800s, Rev. James W.C. Pennington , a Hartford minister and abolitionist who escaped slavery in Maryland, became a leading voice for Black education and inclusion.
Through his writing, organizing, and advocacy, Pennington argued that democracy could never be whole while Black Americans were denied full participation in public life.
That fight for inclusion carried forward into the long struggle for voting rights, from the abolitionist movement through the passage of the 15th Amendment and beyond. And it continues in Connecticut today.
Honoring that legacy means acting on it. In 2023, Connecticut Democrats passed the Connecticut Voting Rights Act , the strongest state-level voting rights law in the nation. We have expanded early and absentee voting, strengthened language access, and continue working to improve access to the ballot and protect every voter’s right to participate.
Black History Month is not only about reflection but also about a shared responsibility to our history, remembering the leaders who came before us, and continuing to build a democracy that is inclusive, fair, and accessible to all.
