Cllr Khan
A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

I'm really pleased that the Government has confirmed that the commissioners overseeing improvements at Nottingham City Council are set to leave on time later this month following strong progress in financial management and governance.

We’ve always said that our priority was to deliver improvements right across the Council so that the Commissioners leave as planned. With the return of all statutory powers to the Council, we’ve done just that. Whilst we know that there is more to do and we must not be complacent in leading Nottingham forward, our focus now must be on delivering for Nottingham and our residents.

This week the government launched a consultation on Local Government Reorganisation and we are encouraging residents, organisations, and partners to have their say over the next seven weeks. Our proposal, known as Option Bii, proposes boundaries based on local identity and genuine community, rather than current configurations. Read more below.

Council House

Commissioners set to leave Council on schedule following improvements

The Government is set to confirm that Commissioners overseeing improvements at Nottingham City Council are no longer required, due the significant progress being made by the authority.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has written to the Council to say that Secretary of State, Steve Reed MP, is minded to end the Commissioners’ two-year appointment on 22 February. It means the Council would have all decision-making powers returned to it.

Commissioner-led intervention at a number of other councils requiring improvement in recent years has had to be extended beyond the initial term. Nottingham’s Commissioner appointment would be ending on time – a recognition of the strong improvements in governance, financial management and leadership stability under the leadership of Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan and Chief Executive, Sajeeda Rose, and with Commissioners’ oversight.

Consultation

Government launches statutory consultation on Local Government Reorganisation

The government has launched a statutory consultation on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, asking residents and organisations for their views on proposals to replace the current two-tier system with two new unitary councils responsible for all local services. Three options were submitted by councils last November, and feedback will help determine the preferred model.

The seven-week consultation runs from 5 February, with a Government decision expected in Summer 2026. If approved, implementation would begin ahead of shadow authority elections in 2027 and full rollout by 2028.

Nottingham's new walking and cycling bridge gets closer to the finish line

Work continues going well at the bridge site as we prepare to open the new Transforming Cities funded bridge this spring.

* We're now working on walking and cycling connections to the new bridge along Daleside Road and Poulton Drive - they will [ [link removed] ]benefit from new cycling and walking infrastructure that will help safely link up those on bike and on foot with the new bridge. The project includes a 3-metre shared use path along the southern side of the pavement on Daleside Road, including a new planting area providing separation between the new path and the road. It's being funded by EMCCA. [ [link removed] ]
* On the south side, we've begun work on a flood storage compensation area which has meant we've shut the footpath from Holme Road for a few weeks
* On site, work is taking place to prepare the area ready for the smaller basin bridge and the ramps and footpaths that will lead to the main bridge on each side of the river

Nationally significant housing case won at Court of Appeal

Housing

Nottingham City Council has scored a big win in an important housing case at the Court of Appeal. The judgment means the city’s rules on renting out shared houses (called HMOs) now cover more properties, helping make sure people living in these homes are safer and better protected.

The case focused on a group that had argued it didn’t need a licence for the homes it rents out. The court agreed with the council that the rules still apply. The ruling gives councils across the country clearer guidance on how these housing laws work and shows Nottingham is serious about raising standards for tenants.
