Dear friend,

Today I’m launching a petition to call on the Government to ensure that the assisted dying Bill cannot be indefinitely delayed or blocked by the House of Lords. But it should not have been me writing to you today. It should have been my dear friend Nathaniel Dye.

Nat was an extraordinary campaigner who dedicated himself both to helping people with cancer live as fully and for as long as possible, and to securing choice and dignity for people at the end of life. He died of terminal cancer last week. I made Nat a promise to keep on campaigning for dignity in death. Please, add your name to his petition so that no more people have to face the end of their life without choice.

I also have terminal cancer and have been fighting alongside Nat for this choice for myself. Like Nat, I know what it’s like to live with the reality of death while politics moves painfully slowly.

I am allergic to opioids, the main source of pain relief in palliative care, and when MPs listened to the public and voted to back the assisted dying Bill, it gave me real hope for the future. But now, Friend, I’m angry that just a handful of Peers are attempting to block this progress and stop people like me - and like Nat - from having the option of control and choice over our deaths.

Nat died fighting for the right he believed everyone should have; not to spend their final days in fear of how they will die, the right to choose.

Nat knew he may not live to see the Bill passed, but he was determined that others should not have to face this uncertainty. He believed that Parliament must be allowed to come to a fair decision, without a small minority being able to block progress that the public - and the Commons - clearly support.

Today, I am carrying the campaign forward.  For Nat, and for so many before him, I will make good on that promise.

Please sign the petition:

This matters too much for a tiny minority of Peers to be allowed to stop progress on a Bill. The Government must act to ensure Parliament can reach a decision.

But for this call to be heard we need support behind it, quickly.

Please add your name today.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for helping carry forward the campaign Nat cared so deeply about.

Best wishes,

Sophie Blake
