Dear Community Partner,
Scammers are working overtime to defraud the communities we serve. The National Consumers League (NCL) recently pointed to some sobering fraud statistics. Among these, monetary loss totals reported by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in early 2025 represented a 558% increase when compared to losses five years earlier. Also, 41% of participants in a 2025 AARP survey said their money or sensitive information had been stolen and used fraudulently.
To help you protect the clients you serve, and in recognition of National Consumer Protection Week, Consumer Action is offering a free "train-the-trainer" webinar on March 3, 2025. The "Protecting Consumers from Emerging Scams" webinar will feature three accomplished speakers who will provide you with knowledge and resources to better serve your community.
- Andrew Rayo, chief of staff and consumer education specialist with FTC's Division of Consumer and Business Education, will discuss scams that are currently being reported to the agency, plus resources for reporting fraud and getting help;
- Melissa Lanning, executive director of the Better Business Bureau Institute for Marketplace Trust, will discuss emerging scams, best practices for helping consumers avoid fraud, and scam prevention resources; and
- Ally Armeson, executive director of FightCybercrime.org, will discuss how community advocates can best serve consumers affected by severe cybercrime, while understanding the shame, isolation and stigma experienced by fraud victims.
Date/Time: Tuesday, March 3, at 10 a.m. PT (11 a.m. MT; noon CT; 1 p.m. ET)
