Friend, this month the nation officially celebrates Black History Month, a time that reminds us that progress has always been powered by education. HBCUs—in the service of which this organization was founded—stand as transformative institutions within Black communities, blending excellence with a commitment to social progress.
UNCF aligns with the goals of Black History Month (and celebrates year-round), founded in 1976 by historian Carter G. Woodson to spotlight Black achievements and resilience—and today, we’re highlighting a few of the UNCF-member colleges that have worked hard to shape history:
• Morehouse College is a hallmark of Black leadership and transformation that counts among its alumni the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. The college continues to nurture students dedicated to activism, innovation and community engagement.
• Spelman College’s history is intricately linked to the broader narrative of Black History. Transformed from a basement school for formerly enslaved women into one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges, the institution’s dedication to social justice and economic excellence remains steadfast.
• Fisk University’s Jubilee Singers are vital in preserving Black spirituals, a cornerstone of African American heritage. Founded in 1871, their groundbreaking tours introduced the world to the rich tradition of Black spirituals and showcased the power of music as a means of cultural preservation.
• Dillard University embodies the spirit of Black History Month through its integration of education, arts and community engagement. Each year, the university hosts events to honor African American achievements and encourage dialogue on future progress.
• Shaw University serves as the birthplace of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a driving force within the civil rights movement. Today, this legacy of advocacy continues to inspire future generations.
Together, UNCF and HBCUs are opening doors, creating innovators, leaders and changemakers. Watch our new video celebrating Black History Month today.
