Commissioner's Column

Thanks to the many charities who have kick-started the year well by lodging their 2025 Annual Information Statement [[link removed]] (AIS). This year, we have more charities on the ACNC Charity Register [[link removed]] than ever before, and pleasingly, more have reported on time than in recent years.

Every registered charity, no matter its size or mission, is required to report annually to the ACNC. When your charity is overdue, its Register record displays a clear note: 'Charity reporting is late', with a red exclamation mark appearing when the AIS is 6 months overdue.

Is your charity's Annual Information Statement overdue?

The 2025 Annual Information Statement is now overdue for most charities that operate on a standard financial year (1 July to 30 June) and have not yet submitted it.

If your charity operates on a standard financial year and it hasn't submitted its 2025 Annual Information Statement, submit it now to avoid potential penalties.

For charities that operate on a calendar year (1 Jan to 31 Dec), submit the 2025 Annual Information Statement before the 30 June due date.

Q: My charity hasn’t submitted its 2025 Annual Information Statement (AIS) and it's now overdue. What should we do?

If your charity has an overdue AIS, log in to the Charity Portal [[link removed]] and submit it as soon as possible. There is no need to call or email us to request an extension.

All charities are required to submit their AIS before the due date. Failing to submit the AIS can result in penalties, and failure to submit two statements can result in revocation of a charity's registration.

Q: I’ve read that charities must report on their related party transactions in their Annual Information Statement. How do I know what our charity needs to report?

Our guidance on related party transactions [[link removed]] outlines these obligations. The definition of a related party and the transactions charities need to report will depend on whether they are classed as small, medium or large in the 2025 AIS reporting year period.

Resources for newly-registered charities

Charities must meet ongoing obligations to retain registration. You must notify us each time a Responsible Person (a committee or board member or trustee) commences or resigns from a position. Learn more [[link removed]].

Holding an annual general meeting is a good way to be accountable to your members. Read more about AGMs and view our free resources [[link removed]].
