John, You know things are getting out of hand when the president of the United States is openly threatening to “take out” a leader in his own party. But that’s where our national redistricting nightmare has taken us… A month after a bipartisan majority in the Indiana Senate rejected a proposed gerrymander, the White House is now vowing to get payback — with Trump posting on social media that the Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore “betrayed” his party in the redistricting fight. He says he’s going to team up with big donors to “work tirelessly” to defeat him in the next election. We’ve come to expect this petty behavior and outright corruption from this president. But their increasing desperation on redistricting tells you a lot about how badly they’re working behind the scenes to force other states into the fray. We’re nine months away from Election Day — and we know the White House is hoping to accelerate their power grab to insulate them from the will of the people this fall. The NDRC is gearing up for whatever they’re planning to throw at us — can you make a donation today to help fight back?
A whole host of states could decide to try to manipulate their maps in the weeks ahead, but we already know one state the White House has its eyes on. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has called a special legislative session for the spring with the express intention of drawing a new gerrymandered congressional map — hoping to flip as many as five seats for Republicans. And behind the scenes, many Republicans are hoping the Supreme Court invalidates a critical part of the Voting Rights Act — handing them an excuse to redraw their own maps in a way that takes voting power away from communities of color. This redistricting crisis is already bad, and it could get a lot worse in the days ahead. That's why the NDRC can't rest, and why every dollar counts in this battle for fair elections. If you can, rush in a donation of any amount to power this work — and let’s ensure we meet this crisis head on. Thanks so much.
