Dear John,

Today, the Government announced the National Food Strategy.

They want to tackle food related issues, like diabetes and obesity, in the wake of the COVID crisis.

I applaud this commitment to healthy food - and reimagining our food infrastructures to avoid the shortages we saw during the lockdown.

But there’s one simple thing the Government could do to guarantee quality, affordable food, and ensure our supermarket shelves stay stacked: strike a comprehensive free trade deal with Europe.

Cutting ourselves off from Europe pushes the UK towards a compromised deal with the USA - that will mean chlorinated chicken and hormone-injected beef on our plates. Ultimately, those already struggling to put food on the table will be forced to accept lower, less healthy diets.

Sign our petition, and urge the Government not to compromise food and animal welfare standards in a trade agreement with Trump. Sign today, and join the campaign.

Disrupted trade with the EU could also mean shortages of staple items like pasta and flour at the end of the year. Just as we may be facing a second wave of the pandemic.

Suppliers and supermarkets have already depleted their stockpiles coping with COVID. The UK must do everything in our power to make sure there is a reliable supply of healthy, affordable food available to all.

To do otherwise, would be to break the Government’s commitment to a new, green, healthy food strategy. And would be to push more vulnerable people into food poverty.

Sign the petition today, and call on the Government to commit to a comprehensive European deal, which lets us import the quality food we rely on from the Continent. Sign now.

Today, the Government has made a promise, not just to uphold the quality of our food, but to galvanise the mechanisms by which it gets on our plates. For some families, failing to get a good deal with Europe could be the difference between having a nutritious meal, and going without.

And if substandard food is the price we pay for a deal with Trump, I would rather strike a comprehensive deal with our nearest trade partner, Europe.

Join me in upholding the excellent food standards we have long enjoyed in Britain, and holding the Government to their promise to provide healthy and plentiful food.

Best wishes,

Naomi Smith,
