The redistricting crisis across the country is fueling widespread turmoil, just nine months before the midterm elections. Nowhere is that more true than in Missouri.
It all started last year when the state legislature redrew their map to pass an egregious gerrymander as part of a power grab by politicians in D.C. Since then, the people of Missouri have fought back to ensure their voice is heard — and have been contending with dirty tricks from anti-democracy forces at every turn.
After citizens quickly gathered 300,000 signatures to place the map on the ballot for a statewide referendum, state officials moved to strike nearly one-third of the signatures. Then, when it was clear the initiative would likely move forward regardless of those efforts, the Secretary of State proposed highly biased ballot language — a tactic he has used for other issues he doesn’t approve of, such as abortion rights.
If that wasn’t enough, outside groups have been targeting voters with threatening text messages that told voters to remove their names from the petition “before it’s too late,” and spending $2.9 million on efforts to try to stop the citizen-led ballot initiative.
Such a blatant assault on direct democracy is hard to contend with. But Missourians aren’t giving up the fight, and neither will we.
We need you to join us and support Redistricting Action’s work to fight back against gerrymanders in Missouri and across the country. [[link removed]]
