Introducing: From the HOPE not hate archive |

HOPE not hate have just launched a new project called 'From The Archive'. Once a month we will dive into our archive - an extensive collection of historical fascist and antifascist material - and tell you one story from history. Below is our first edition. |

From The Archive: The Britons |
|
The Britons were a notorious antisemitic organisation from 1920s Britain. They launched their first newspaper - Jewry Ueber Alles - in February 1920. In September 1920 it became The Hidden Hand, and in May 1924 they rebranded as The British Guardian.
A report from Special Branch at the time suggests that only 150 copies of The Hidden Hand were produced, which makes it likely that the collection of these papers in the HOPE not hate archive are some of the last remaining copies in the world.
What is truly striking when reading these papers is the similarity between the conspiritorial antisemitism that was published 100 years ago, and the conspiritorial antisemitism that is published today.
Another thing that leaps out is the connection that this group had with Hitler and the Nazis - then a small antisemitic movement who operated under the name National Socialist German Worker's Party.
The Hidden Hand published articles on the work Hitler's party were doing, later The British Guardian would promote copies of Hitler's book Mein Kampf, and the organisation's founder even travelled to Germany to speak at a rally alongside the future dictator.
These vital pieces of history should serve as a reminder to us all of the rate at which violent far-right politics can move from the fringes of society to the center of public opinion.
Only 10 years after The Hidden Hand published an article about a small Nazi party rally in Murnau, Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. The rest, unfortunately, is history.

Help us to keep hate on the fringes |
|
At HOPE not hate we exist to ensure that hate never enters the mainstream of British politics. We constantly track the actions of far-right groups, send informants in to infiltrate their ranks and work to undermine them at every turn.
This work is vital, but it isn't cheap.
