Clean air is a human right. Unfortunately, millions of Washington residents face elevated air pollution. From highway pollution to wildfire smoke, communities throughout the state face greater risks of cancer, heart, and lung disease, and even a shortened life expectancy.

Today, 16 areas in our state are designated as overburdened and highly affected by air pollution. Disparities in air quality are often the result of racist policies, such as redlining. More than half of Washington residents in areas with the greatest air pollution are people of color.

This can, and must, change. Take action now to speak up for clean air for all.

The Department of Ecology is currently leading a rulemaking on air quality in overburdened communities. This rulemaking, a part of the Climate Commitment Act, requires the Department of Ecology to reduce air pollution in highly impacted communities.

Make your voice heard! Send Ecology your comment today. Encourage stronger protections that improve air quality in the Washington communities that have the greatest air pollution.
