Trump and the Republicans in the Senate are terrorizing Americans. While Trump puts federal agents on the streets to commit state violence against protesters, Republican Senators are gleefully allowing those affected by the COVID-19 epidemic to choose between deadly disease and financial devastation. They do this in an attempt to intimidate us, to beat us into submission—literally and metaphorically.

Trump, McConnell, and all their enablers should know: we don’t negotiate with terrorists. And we have actions for you to fight back!

Now’s our chance: Pressure your members of Congress to pass the HEROES Act.

This week, Republican Senators revealed their coronavirus aid package, dubbed the HEALS Act (yes, they actually called it that). Just as we expected, the aid package is disastrous. Here’s what’s in it:
  • Enhanced unemployment cut from $600 a week to $200 a week
  • One-time $1,200 checks to the same people who got them last time
  • No aid to state and local governments that are running out of money to cover pandemic-related as well as regular costs
  • Extension of Paycheck Protection Program with minimal additional oversight
  • Blanket liability immunity for businesses that refuse or fail to protect their employees or customers from COVID infection, even in instances of flagrant disregard for health and safety standards
  • Cuts to Social Security and Medicare: A closed-door, fast-track commission to propose cuts to our earned Social Security and Medicare benefits. That proposal would then receive an up or down vote in the Senate without the ability to filibuster.
  • Billions of dollars for non-COVID related purposes, like Department of Defense spending, money for renovating FBI headquarters, and more.

Needless to say, this bill is a pathetic excuse for aid legislation at a critical time for the American people and the economy. And yet Republicans are still unable to agree amongst themselves on this proposal, with over half of Republican Senators projected to vote no.

Moratorium evictions have already expired, and with enhanced unemployment running out in a matter of days, Americans are at a financial precipice. The House passed the HEROES Act two months ago, and Republican Senators have sat on their hands this whole time and are now failing to reach consensus on their own counter-proposal.

This is an outrage. But it is also an opportunity. Many Republican senators are feeling the heat of their upcoming elections.  If our Democratic senators can convince just a few of them to get on board with the HEROES Act, we might just be able to pass it.

Contact your senators and tell them to do everything in their power to pass the HEROES Act!

Step up to oppose Trump’s secret police!

Trump’s assault on the rights of Americans continues on the streets, as federal agents remain unaccountable to any authority. Not that our elected officials have tried very hard to hold them accountable. Things will change if we let them know we’re watching… so let’s do that!

Last week, our members attended and live-tweeted a town hall with San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin. Our members sent in questions asking how the DA plans to respond to any federal agent activity in the city, and he promised that he will use all the tools at his disposal to protect the people of our city.

Now, we’re taking our demands to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the Mayor. Sign on to our open letter to Mayor Breed and the BoS today! You can read the letter here

Finally, contact your members of Congress and tell them to stop Trump’s secret police with legislation that restricts the use of federal agents and requires them to identify themselves.

Windivisible Week of Action: Sign up for a training NOW!

Here in California, the ballots for this year’s general election go out October 3rd, which means our election begins in just 65 days. We’re really in the home stretch—so if you aren’t already doing electoral work, it’s time to start!

Indivisible National is leading the way with Windivisible and its first Windivisible Week of Action.

All this week, Indivisibles are coming together to host phone banks and text banks to reach out to the voters we need to win big in November. There will be training sessions, talking points, and everything you need to campaign for your favorite candidates from the comfort of your home. Here’s how you can get involved:

 1. First, learn more about the Windivisible Week of Action. This page explains why and how we’re gearing up to secure a Democratic trifecta in November. When you’re ready to take action, use these links to sign up to join our phone banking and text banking teams!

2. Once you’re signed up, we’ll send you the details for trainings to help you get the skills you need to be a confident and effective phone bank or text bank volunteer. We highly recommend our 2020 training on August 8 to learn the basics of how to phone bank and text bank, or sign up for an advanced workshop on how to use electoral best practices in your own campaigns.

The next text banking training webinar is tomorrow, Thursday, July 30, at 12 noon PT. Register here for it.

If that day and time doesn’t work for you, register for the next one on Saturday, August 1, at 10 AM PT (Register here).

If none of those work for you, look for “Indivisible Text Banking Training” events on Indivisible National’s frequently updated texting schedule.

We’ll also have a New Members meeting on Sunday, August 2, at 1 PM, which will focus on text bank training and flipping the Senate. Please join us for this event to meet new members and learn how to text bank! RSVP here.

On Saturday, August 15, from 5-6 PM, join numerous Indivisible chapters, led by Indivisible Los Gatos, for a Zoom fundraiser for Indivisible’s Payback Project.   What does it take to win a seat in the Senate? Attendees will get an "insider look" on how to take back the U.S. Senate and how the Payback Project will do that.  There will be time for sharing stories and a Q&A. Guests include Rep. Anna Eshoo (CA-18), Ezra Levin (co-founder of Indivisible National), and María Urbana (National Political Director of Indivisible National).

We’re working on a special calendar of all the electoral events in our network of activists, so you have even more options for phone banking, text banking and more!
