Dear fellow MoveOn member,
A federal judge denied Minnesota’s request to block ICE’s surge in the state, ruling that ICE’s reign of terror can continue in Minneapolis for now.1
While legal strategies are important to our movement, it is clear the courts alone will not save us from ICE’s atrocities. It’s going to be up to us to stay organized, disciplined, relentless, and loud as hell to drive ICE out of our streets—and to keep up the drumbeat for as long as it takes.
And that’s what gives me hope in these awful times: the people of Minneapolis.
Minneapolis has been leading the way and showing the country what resistance and solidarity in the face of brutality looks like. For weeks, in freezing cold temperatures, Minnesotans have been peacefully protesting by the thousands, delivering groceries to their immigrant neighbors, driving friends to doctor appointments, walking children to school—all to protect their communities from the federal government.
They’re showing up for their community—and for all of us. Because if ICE can flood the Twin Cities region with these militant agents of terror and get away with it, any of our communities could be next.
Our movement is reverberating across America. It can be felt and heard even by a sociopath sitting in the Oval Office. The roots of America’s outrage against tyranny are deepening and spreading, and their green shoots are sprouting.
Now, we must double down on our fight against the regime.
Which is why I am asking you to join me in supporting MoveOn by making a $9 donation today. Your support will help fuel a powerful nationwide movement to strategically and effectively challenge the regime’s worst actions and abuses. John, pause over these two words: public pressure.
They explain much of what has happened in recent days.
Why did the Department of Justice finally agree to commence a civil rights investigation into the murder of Alex Pretti?
Why did seven Senate Republicans join all Senate Democrats in voting to block the spending bill for the Department of Homeland Security?
Why did two Senate Republicans even vote with Democrats to repeal the $75 billion funding increase for ICE that Republicans had included in their Big Ugly Bill last July?
Public pressure.
It’s what a free people do when threatened by a dictator or fascist strongman—we join together. In outrage and disbelief. In fear and in fury. We join together to say ENOUGH.
Public pressure seeps—and boils—up from the roots of America. I’ve seen and felt it (and been part of it) before. During the Vietnam War. During the Civil Rights Movement.
And right now, the task before us is to keep up the public pressure—and ratchet it up.
That’s why I’m asking you to support MoveOn today. Your donation to MoveOn will help us provide the infrastructure to safely hold thousands of actions and protests across the country to get ICE out of our communities and flood Democrats in Congress with calls and letters to pressure them to stop funding ICE.
Please, if you are able, will you make a $9 donation to MoveOn? (If you have saved your payment information with ActBlue, your donation will go straight through.)
Thanks for all you do. And don’t forget to keep up the pressure.
–Robert Reich
