John - The Trump administration recently issued a new rule that would take away protections that keep children and families seeking asylum safe. Known as the Flores Settlement Agreement, this decades-old court order prevents indefinite detention of children. It also requires that children in detention are treated humanely by providing soap, toothbrushes and education. This week, Save the Children Action Network, Save the Children and other child-advocacy and health organizations will call on the courts to reject this new rule. While this issue makes its way through our legal system, we need to pressure Congress to act to protect children and families! Please ask your members of Congress to codify these protections into law! I was recently in New Mexico talking with families and children who have fled violence, rape and gang violence. If you walk all the way to the United States from Honduras, Guatemala or El Salvador, things have to be pretty bad in your home country. Seeking asylum is not a crime and these children and families shouldn’t be treated as criminals! The president’s new rule also calls for his administration to have oversight over the detention centers. This is the same administration that argued that providing toothpaste, soap and adequate sleep were not necessary. After many stories about the abuse and neglect children are experiencing in these detention centers, we cannot trust that this administration will look out for children’s best interests. We must speak out today to persuade Congress to act! Please urge your members of Congress to act today. Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
