Dear John,

Every home has a story. Our latest report, Rumah Kita: The Story of Our Becoming ([link removed]) , tells the story of the creation of Urgent Action Fund Asia & Pacific, a home for thousands of activists on the frontlines of the work to build a more just, equitable, and joyful world for all.

From the founding of Urgent Action Fund in 1997, there was always the intention to decentralize and enable deeper regional analysis and greater responsiveness to local feminist movements and activists and shift funding decisions closer to the ground.

This approach to decolonizing philanthropy is made tangible through the story of UAF-Asia & Pacific. Our report offers practical insights for anyone creating funding mechanisms closer to grassroots movements. Rather than a blueprint, Rumah Kita, meaning “Our Home”, is a story and a guide for joyful, creative, collective experimentation.

Decolonizing philanthropy might not feel urgent or relevant in this moment of heightened crisis, but now is exactly the time to invest in shifting power to frontline feminist organizations. Read more about how regionalization can be an essential and timely tool for philanthropy in an op-ed about the creation of UAF-Asia & Pacific on Alliance Magazine ([link removed]) by Vinita Sahasranaman and Virisila Buadromo, the Co-Leads of UAF- Asia & Pacific, and Kate Kroeger, Executive Director of Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism.

The wisdom, skills, and strategies needed to address today’s challenges already exist within our communities—they just need resources and power to flourish. We hope our report will be a helpful resource for imagining and creating robust mechanisms that resource movements at the ground level to weather the storms ahead and emerge stronger on the other side.
