The New Jersey legislature passed three bills designed to protect residents from ICE ([link removed]) . According to State Senator Bob Smith, legislators were motivated by the recent “atrocities” at the hands of ICE agents, including the murder of Renee Good. Democrats were also empowered by big wins in November that helped increase their majority and elect Governor Mikie Sherrill, who took office on January 20.

Senate Bill No. 5036 will require the state Attorney General to write model policies for how and where federal agents enforce immigration laws. This law protects immigrants in sensitive places such as schools, courthouses, and hospitals. Advocates recognize that state governments have no power to direct ICE, but say the bill makes it “very clear that New Jersey has consistently been committed to honoring people’s due process rights.”

New Jersey has the second-largest percentage of immigrants in the United States, behind California, and it has been the target of federal anti-immigration policies. At the beginning of his second term, Trump approved $1 billion to reopen Delaney Hall in Newark, a former private prison, as a migrant detention center. After being open for less than a year, the facility has already seen its first death of 41-year-old Jean Wilson Brutus, who died the day after being detained ([link removed]) . Detainees are also facing inhumane conditions, including overcrowding and a lack of edible food. When Newark Mayor Ras Baraka tried to visit the facility, he was arrested, despite being invited inside.

Trump does not protect immigrants; New Jersey does. We must support state governments that stand up against the Trump administration. Join Immigrants’ List today!
