John,
Our stories are shaped by what we’re taught. The values instilled in us, the perspectives passed down, and the lessons learned through lived experience. As part of Black History Month, I asked our staff to reflect on the lessons they carry and how those teachings have shaped their experiences. Here’s what they shared:
“‘Make space, take space.’ Many of us have heard this slogan more recently, but my mother has been preaching this concept to my cousins and me for decades. This lesson is two-fold: First, you have a voice that deserves to be heard. Go into every room with your head held high, and don't be afraid to speak up for what you believe in. Next, it is not enough to be the "first" of us in that room. Hold the door open for more of us to come in behind you. When you earn your seat at the table, help set the table for others.” — Tatiana
“As a Black woman, I learned from my mother and grandmother the power of prioritizing joy alongside perseverance and resilience. Their example taught me that joy is not a reward at the end of trials and tribulations, but rather a source of strength that actually sustains us through them. They showed me that when I see strength as rooted in grace, laughter, and love, choosing joy feels like an intentional, powerful act. This lesson continues to shape how I show up in the world, tackle everyday challenges, and honor the legacy that was passed down to me.” — Gabriella
“I grew up in a community of love. If one person cooked dinner, we all had dinner to eat. If someone was going to the store, anyone could hop in the car. We brought our food, music, and folding chairs outside, and the entire block would gather together for laughs, dancing, and a good ol’ fish fry. Growing up in a Black community where we all supported one another is the foundation of my commitment to community care, and I carry that lesson with me every day: We take care of us. Whether it’s mutual aid, carpools to our polling place, or a collection plate for a family in need, we always have to show up for one another. Our future depends on it.” — Ashlynn
The lessons we carry don't stop with reflection, they shape how we show up for our communities and our future. This Black History Month, I invite you to take what resonates and turn it into action. Here are a few simple ways you can show up:
