.The House Ways and Means Committee held a full committee hearing to question health insurance CEOs. I questioned these leaders on the economic reality facing American families, and why the "efficiencies" of modern health care don’t translate into affordability for patients nationwide.
This year, 14 Kansas counties now have only a single insurer left available to them. And when a local hospital closes, like the one in Derby, it isn’t just a business failure, it’s a new permanent expense for every patient in that town. A routine checkup has turned into an all-day event, including lost wages and travel costs that aren’t covered by insurance.
This only adds to the affordability crisis where the patient pays twice – once through high premiums and again through the increased cost of accessing health care through a shrinking market.
I will continue to fight for American families that are still facing skyrocketing premiums, high deductibles and reduced patient access after the failures of the Unaffordable Care Act.
