Dear Green American,

Here's what's happening in dozens of states right now: Big Tech companies are getting billions of dollars in tax breaks to build data centers—and our communities are paying the price.

The math doesn't add up:

When states hand out tax breaks for data center construction, that's money that could have gone to our schools, roads, and local programs. In Illinois, a Microsoft data center received more than $38 million in tax exemptions. Texas has given out over $1 billion in tax breaks for data centers.

Meanwhile, these facilities:

Drain massive amounts of water from local supplies

Drive up electricity costs for residents

Take up land that could serve community needs

Create noise and light pollution

Provide very few permanent jobs after construction ends

It's a bad deal: our communities lose tax revenue and resources, while Big Tech gets the subsidies and profits.

We teamed up with our allies on this action to protect our communities.

The growing AI boom makes this worse:

As artificial intelligence expands, so does the demand for data centers. Tech giants like Meta and Amazon are racing to build more facilities to power AI—and they're asking for tax breaks to do it.

Our schools are already struggling with budget cuts—cutting programs for children with disabilities, increasing class sizes, and letting go of teachers. Our communities can't afford to subsidize corporate infrastructure that gives so little back.

Our communities deserve better than being asked to subsidize corporations that drain our resources and inflate our utility bills.

We have teamed up with our allies on this action to protect our communities.

When we stand together, we can stop this corporate giveaway and redirect those resources where they belong—in our schools, infrastructure, and communities.

Thanks for being part of our Green America community.
