*Homeowners Encouraged to Regularly Review Their Insurance Policy for Potential Discounts*
The Maine Bureau of Insurance encourages homeowners to review their homeowners policy to make sure they receive all available discounts. Premium discounts may be available for home improvements, positive updates in personal finances, and other changes. Policyholders should reach out to their insurance company or agent to discuss changes that may entitle them to premium discounts.
Insurance companies often offer discounts for maintenance work and home upgrades, such as installing a new roof or updating plumbing, heating, or electrical systems. Some insurance companies offer discounts for installing smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, storm shutters, and back-up generators. Home security features, such as burglar alarms, door deadbolts, and window security devices may also qualify for discounts. Homeowners should report any major repair or renovation to their insurance company or agent so their homes are properly insured and the homeowner receives all applicable discounts.
If you manage your finances well, you may qualify for discounts based on your credit history, outstanding debt, and insurance loss data (previous claims). Some insurers also use this information to calculate an insurance score that can affect premiums. Many insurers offer a discount if you purchase both homeowners and auto insurance from the same company.
“Mainers should talk to their agent or insurance company regularly to make sure they are getting every discount they qualify for. It also never hurts to ask if you should switch to a different coverage option depending on the extent to which your property or personal circumstances have changed,” said Bob Carey, Superintendent of the Bureau of Insurance. Carey also noted that “a well-cared for home can lower insurance costs in addition to being its own reward.”
